Commentary

That's all from us today folks, we hope you enjoyed the game!

Turkey exit at the group stages, after failing to pick up any points, while Italy finish top of Group A, with Wales second. Switzerland will now have an anxious wait to see if they have done enough.

Switzerland secure a third-place finish in Group A after a 3-1 victory over Turkey, so they will have to wait and see if their four points will be enough to see them progress to the knockout stages. They led 2-0 at the break, after goals from Seferovic and Shaqiri, but Turkey pulled one back just after the hour mark through Kahveci, however, Shaqiri grabbed another shortly after to make it three. They could have scored a few more, with Cakir called into action numerous times and Xhaka hit the post from a set piece.

90'+4'

FULL-TIME: SWITZERLAND 3-1 TURKEY

90'+2'

Late Switzerland change, with Widmer replaced by Mbabu.

90'

There will be a minimum of three minutes added time played at the end of the second half.

88'

Switzerland are seeing the game out now, they look very comfortable and good value for their victory, with Turkey heading out of the tournament.

86'

Calhanoglu is the latest Turkey player to be replaced, with Tokoz coming on.

86'

Embolo is also coming off and he has been replaced by Mehmedi.

85'

Zuber heads off after an impressive display, providing all three assists and he has been replaced by Benito.

84'

Turkey have won their final group stage match at each of their last four appearances in a major tournament (World Cup and Euros), since losing 0-3 against Denmark at Euro 1996.

82'

There's less than 10 minutes, plus any additional time left to play here, can Turkey get another? Or will Switzerland extend their lead to improve their goal difference. They'll also be hoping Wales concede some more against Italy.

80'

Under is the other man to be replaced, Karaman coming on.

80'

Another couple of Turkey substitutions now, with Kahveci heading off and he has been replaced by Kokcu.

79'

ALMOST! Switzerland are now caught out at the back, with Under racing forward and he powers an effort towards goal, but he just gets slightly too much on it and it flies narrowly over the crossbar.

78'

Xhaka is booked for protesting a decision by the referee, with the Switzerland captain appealing for a penalty, but nothing is given.

77'

OFF THE POST! Xhaka steps up to take a free-kick right on the edge of the box, after he was fouled by Soyuncu. The Arsenal man drills it hard and low towards the bottom right corner, but it strikes the post and a team-mate is unable to pounce on the rebound.

76'

Soyuncu is booked after he steps across Xhaka right on the edge of the penalty area, handing Switzerland an excellent chance from the set piece.

75'

Shaqiri has been excellent today and he also comes off, with Martinez his replacement.

75'

Switzerland make their first changes, with Seferovic the first to come off and he has been replaced by Gavranovic.

75'

Celik is the second Turkey player to be booked after his challenge on Zuber.

72'

Zuber is the third player to register three assists in a single match at the European championships (after Michael Laudrup and Rui Costa).

70'

The first yellow card of the game is shown to Calhanoglu for his late challenge on Elvedi.

68'

Zuber raced through in behind and could have gone for goal himself, but Shaqiri was in a much better position and he set his team-mate up perfectly, who made no mistakes with the finish.

Goal!
68'

GOAL! Switzerland restore their two-goal lead, it's 3-1! Shaqiri with his second of the game after Switzerland catch Turkey out on the counter-attack. It's an excellent break away, with Turkey unable to get numbers back in time and Zuber lays the ball through to Shaqiri to his right, who then smashes it past Cakir.

67'

It's pretty end-to-end at the moment, with Turkey trying to push forward in search of an equaliser, but because of this they look vulnerable on the counter.

65'

It would still take a lot for Turkey to qualify for the group, but their chances look slightly more promising now they've pulled a goal back.

63'

Turkey make substitution following the goal, with Ayhan coming off and he has been replaced by Yokuslu.

62'

Calhanoglu hasn't done much so far today, not getting on the ball as much as he would like, but he did well there to set up Kahveci for the goal.

Goal!
62'

GOAL! Turkey pull one back, it’s 2-1! A moment of brilliance from Kahveci to score Turkey’s first goal of the game. They work the ball really well on the edge of the box, with Calhanoglu unable to work space for the shot himself, so instead he passes to Calhanoglu, who flicks it inside and then powers his effort into the top left corner of the net.

60'

CHANCE! Cakir just manages to get fingertips to a low effort from Seferovic, after the striker easily gets into the Turkey penalty area, before being allowed time and space to pick his spot. However, the keeper comes to their rescue.

58'

It remains Italy who lead 1-0 against Wales in the other game, but Wales are now down to 10-men, which could be an incentive for Switzerland to push on and score a few more goals, as it could overturn the goal difference.

56'

The pace of the game has dropped in the last few minutes, with Switzerland not showing as much urgency to get a third and Turkey have been poor.

54'

Switzerland’s loss against Italy on matchday two was their first defeat in all competitions in 2021. They last lost consecutive matches in October 2020 (vs Croatia and Spain).

52'

CHANCE! Embolo has been excellent today and almost got on the scoresheet! Zakir is forced into making an excellent diving save at his near post, tipping the ball over the crossbar, after the midfielder broke free in the box and fired an effort on target.

51'

Good chance! Switzerland with another quick attack, with Shaqiri releasing Zuber to his left, who tries to beat Cakir from a tight angle, but the keeper makes a comfortable save.

50'

Decent effort! Yilmaz gets away from his marker at the far post as a lovely cross is whipped into the box by Under, but the Turkey striker can only head the ball high over the Switzerland goal.

48'

Switzerland are just feeling their way into the second period, keeping the ball well in midfield, but not pushing forward with much intent early on.

46'

The second half is under way!

Half

As it stands Switzerland are level on points with Wales in Group A, but with a worse goal difference, however, that could all change with a few more goals in the second half. Meanwhile Turkey seem to be heading for the exit, unless they can pull off an unlikely comeback, but changes need to be made.

Half

Switzerland lead 2-0 at the break to hand themselves a huge chance of qualifying for the knockout stages. They opened the scoring early on, with Seferovic firing it past Cakir after six minutes, before Shaqiri doubled their lead on 26 minutes. The Liverpool man had a chance shortly after to make it three but was superbly denied by the Turkey keeper one-on-one. Turkey have kept Sommer busy at the other end, with the keeper forced into making several great saves to keep a clean sheet.

45'+1'

HALF-TIME: SWITZERLAND 2-0 TURKEY

45'

There will be a minimum of one minute added time played at the end of the first half.

43'

CHANCE! Mulder gets in behind after an excellent counter-attack down the left wing, he gets into the box and then cuts inside, before firing a shot at goal. However, it is too close to Sommer, who makes a good stop.

41'

There isn’t long left to play before the end of the first half, can Turkey pull one back before the half-time whistle? Or, will Switzerland be able to extend their lead?

39'

No player has scored more major tournament goals for Switzerland than Shaqiri, who has just scored in his sixth across World Cup (4) and European Championship (2) matches (level with Josef Hügi).

37'

A third goal for Switzerland would surely wrap up the win and three points here. Shaqiri has been excellent so far, their biggest threat in front of goal.

35'

As it stands Switzerland will remain third, as it is still goalless between Italy and Wales in the other Group A game and Wales have the goal difference advantage.

33'

SAVE! Sommer is once again called into action in the Switzerland goal! Turkey find time and space on the edge of the box again and Muldur tries his luck from 25 yards out and it seems to be heading into the bottom left corner, but Sommer gets across and pushes it wide. Excellent save.

32'

A lot of Turkey's efforts are coming from long range, with Switzerland doing well to keep them away from their final third, with their opponents hardly entering their penalty area.

30'

We’re past the half an hour mark now and it remains Switzerland who lead 2-0, thanks to goals from Seferovic and Shaqiri. They are controlling the game and are looking to extend their lead further.

28'

SAVE! Shaqiri almost makes it 3-0! Seferovic spots the run of Shaqiri in behind the Turkey defence and releases his team-mate, who sprints through on goal and only has the keeper to beat. However, Cakir races off his line and throws himself at the effort, getting a touch on the strike which sends it just wide of the post.

26'

Another assist by Zuber, this time he sets it up for Shaqiri on the edge of the box and his team-mate does the rest with a superb finish.

Goal!
26'

GOAL! Shaqiri doubles Switzerland’s lead, it’s 2-0! What a finish it is as well from the Liverpool man! Turkey fail to get close enough to their opponents, who work it well on the edge of the box, before Zuber lays it across to Shaqiri, who then curls the ball into the top right corner of the net.

25'

Turkey have won each of their last two encounters with Switzerland, with both victories seeing the Switzerland open the scoring. Turkey have never won three in a row against these opponents.

23'

Not too far away! Good counter by Turkey, stretching the Switzerland defence and the ball falls to Tufan on the edge of the box, but his effort flies just over the crossbar.

22'

Switzerland are finding a lot of space in midfield at the moment, with Turkey not getting close enough to them at times and it is putting them under pressure at the back.

20'

Turkey are yet to register a point or a goal so far in this tournament and they need a win and a huge goal difference swing today to stand a chance of qualifying to the knockout stages.

18'

We will hopefully see a few goals here today, with both teams needing a win and there is already an excellent pace to the game, with both pushing forward.

16'

CHANCE! Sommer with another excellent save to deny Turkey! Under whips a lovely cross into the box from the right wing and it falls to Mulder at the far post, who powers an effort towards goal. However, the strike is too close to the Switzerland keeper and he makes an excellent stop.

14'

Turkey need to try and get back on the ball and get the crowd on their side, as that can be a massive advantage, especially as much of the crowd in Baku is made up of their supporters.

12'

This will be the second meeting between Switzerland and Turkey at a major tournament. Their first encounter was in the group phase of Euro 2008 – Switzerland, as co-hosts, lost 2-1 to the Turkey.

10'

Switzerland are starting to dominate possession now, they look full of confidence due to the scoreline and Turkey are having to sit deep and defend at the moment.

8'

The early Swiss goal will be a huge blow to Turkey, as they had started the game so well and had a great opportunity a few minutes ago.

6'

Zuber looked to play a quick one-two with Seferovic on the edge of the box, but instead the striker opted to turn and shoot at goal himself, producing a superb finish.

Goal!
6'

GOAL! Switzerland take the lead after just six minutes, it's 1-0! It comes from the first Switzerland attack of the game, they work it well up the pitch, with Zuber receiving it on the edge of the penalty area, before laying it off to Seferovic, who has so much time to turn and then pick his spot. The effort flew straight into the bottom right corner of the net, with Cakir unable to reach it.

4'

CHANCE! Yilmaz chests a ball down on the edge of the penalty area to Ayhan, who was in space and had time to power a shot towards goal on the volley. It looks to be heading into the top left corner of the net, but Sommer does well to get across and makes an excellent diving save to deny Turkey.

2'

Turkey with the first shot of the game, with Yilmaz finding a little bit of time and space on the edge of the penalty area, but his strike is well blocked and flies wide.

1'

We're under way!

The teams are out on the pitch and kick-off is just a few minutes away, stay tuned for all the match action!
