Spain will have to wait until later on to find out who they'll be facing in their semi-final on Tuesday, with Belgium and Italy kicking off shortly. Switzerland couldn't pull off another shock by beating Spain to reach their first-ever major tournament semi-final, and they're heading home.
Spain are the first team through to the semi-final after beating Switzerland 3-1 on penalties. The Swiss went behind through an own goal but equalised through Shaqiri before having Freuler sent off. They held on through extra time to take it to penalties but faltered where they thrived on Monday. Simon made two saves and Vargas missed, and Spain's three was enough to go through.
FULL-TIME: SWITZERLAND 1-1 SPAIN (SPAIN WIN 3-1 ON PENALTIES).
OYARZABAL SCORES! The youngster is cool as you like when he steps up to the spot and he slots the ball into the bottom-right corner. Sommer dives the wrong way and Spain win it!
MISS! Vargas steps up now, but the nerves are getting to the Swiss. He sends his effort flying over the crossbar. Spain can win it with the next one...
A great penalty from Moreno now as he fires his effort into the top-right corner. Sommer goes the right way again, but he wasn't getting near that. 2-1 Spain!
SIMON SAVES AGAIN! Akanji keeps his penalty low and goes the same way as Schar. Simon reads it well again and holds onto this one too.
SOMMER SAVES! It's a good height for the goalkeeper as Rodri sends it to the goalkeeper's left. Sommer guesses the right way and he holds onto it. Still 1-1.
SIMON SAVES! Schar waits for the keeper to move but it's a tame effort from him. Simon dives the right way and holds onto it.
It's a great penalty from Olmo as he rifles his effort into the top-left corner. Sommer went the right way but was nowhere near it. 1-1.
Gavranovic puts Switzerland ahead as he lifts his penalty into the top corner. Simon dives the wrong way, but wouldn't have got it anyway.
OFF THE POST! Busquets steps up first and Sommer dives the wrong way but the Spanish captain hits it against the bottom of the post.
10-man Switzerland hold on and they're taking it to penalties for the second consecutive game. They'll feel they deserve this after the shift they put in and will be feeling confident after Sommer's heroics on Monday. Spain had so many chances to win it in extra time, but they just couldn't find a way past the keeper. They don't have the best recent record from the penalty spot, but Luis Enrique will be hoping they can change that now.
END OF EXTRA TIME: SWITZERLAND 1-1 SPAIN.
Gavranovic loses the ball and sticks out a leg to trip Busquets. He's shown a yellow card and, if Switzerland get through, he'll miss the semi-final.
Final change for Spain now and Luis Enrique is looking ahead to penalties as Rodri comes on for Pedri.
Switzerland are all over the place and Akanji sloppily gives the ball away to Busquets. He slides it through for Moreno and he takes it around Elvedi before hitting a tame shot on goal which Sommer holds onto.
Should this go to penalties, Switzerland would be the fourth side to go to penalties twice at one edition of the Euros, after England in 1996 (W1 L1), France in 1996 (W1 L1) and Poland in 2016 (W1 L1).
Switzerland are under all sorts of pressure here, but they're just about managing to deal with it for now. Alba's cross is put back across the box by Llorente and he picks out Pedri. He gets the ball out of his feet to have a shot, but a deflection takes it wide.
Another change for Spain now and it's Thiago that's coming on for Torres.
GREAT CHANCE! Llorente pulls away from Akanji to drill a low cross into the box and Olmo hits it first time in the middle. He gets it all wrong though and blazes his effort high over the bar.
BLOCK! Alba times his run perfectly to stay onside before squaring a great cross into Llorente on the penalty spot. He takes the shot first time and Rodriguez slides in to make a brilliant block to deny him.
A hopeful ball upfield from Sommer ends up being a good out ball to Gavranovic and he lays it off to Mbabu on the right. He drives into the final third, but can't find a way past Torres to swing in a cross and puts it out for a goal-kick.
Spain get us back underway for the second half of extra time!
It's as we were at half-time in extra time, with 10-man Switzerland still holding Spain 1-1. There have been some wonderful chances for the Spanish to put this tie to bed but just couldn't find the back of the net. Moreno fired a great chance wide from very close range, while Oyarzabal, Alba and Moreno all forced good saves out of Sommer.
HALF-TIME: SWITZERLAND 1-1 SPAIN.
Olmo is still causing Switzerland a lot of problems as he cuts inside from the left again but he has three defenders tight to him. He can't find any space for a shot, and his cross is blocked by Mbabu.
SOMMER AGAIN! Olmo cuts inside before switching it out to Oyarzabal on the right and he cuts inside before curling his shot towards the far post. Sommer is equal to it again though and tips it wide of the goal.
GREAT SAVE! Spain go direct with Busquets looping it up to Moreno and he holds off two Swiss defenders to bring it down before hitting his shot on goal. He's very close to Sommer and the goalkeeper does well to push it wide of his far post.
Widmer is also going off, with Mbabu on to replace him.
Final changes for Switzerland now and Zakaria is making way for Schar.
Busquets switches play out to Alba on the left and, although he scuffs at it, he manages to get the ball into Llorente. He backheels it towards Moreno in the six-yard box, but Sommer gets in quickly to intercept it.
Olmo steps away from Elvedi on the edge of the box and opens up a pocket of space for a shot. He drills it on goal but a big deflection off Akanji wrongfoots Sommer and sends it flying wide of the near post.
GOOD SAVE! Spain are upping the pressure and Alba drives to the edge of the box before hitting his shot. It's swerving through the air, but Sommer keeps his eyes on it and punches it over the bar.
Pedri spots Alba in space on the left again and tries to thread a pass through to him. Widmer is alert to the danger though and he does well to intercept it.
WHAT A MISS! Alba has so much space down the left and he drills an early cross into the six-yard box. It beat Elvedi and falls for Moreno who tries to fire it past Sommer from close range, but he sends it wide of the post.
There's a change for Spain at the start of extra time as Oyarzabal comes on for Ferran Torres.
Gavranovic gets us back underway for extra time!
It's the second time this week that these sides have been forced to extra time and the tiredness looked like it was starting to set in. Spain looked out of ideas towards the end of the game, so Luis Enrique will be rallying his side, while Switzerland will be hoping for more of the same despite having the trickier task of being a man down.
And we're going to extra time after a 1-1 draw between Switzerland and Spain. Luis Enrique's side led just eight minutes in when Zakaria's block helped Alba's volley past Sommer. Switzerland were the better side after the break and a mix-up between Laporte and Pau Torres meant Freuler could set up Shaqiri for the equaliser. The Swiss are down to 10 men though after Freuler was sent off after he caught Moreno with the follow-through on his tackle.
END OF 90 MINUTES: SWITZERLAND 1-1 SPAIN.
Laporte climbs over Gavranovic to head the ball away and is shown a yellow card for the challenge.
And Switzerland are making a change as well with Fassnacht on for Zuber.
Third change for Spain now and it's Koke that's being taken off for Marcos Llorente.
Spain are still keeping hold of the ball well here, but they look out of ideas on how to break down Switzerland. Koke tries to curl a cross into Olmo on the far side of the box, but a deflection off Zakaria takes it to Sommer.
Alba has stayed down in his own box after making a clearance as Gavranovic crashed into the back of him and caught him in the neck with his elbow. He's quickly back to his feet after treatment and will be able to carry on.
The ball drops for Laporte on the edge of the box and he decides to have a go from distance despite the crowd of players ahead of him. Elvedi makes a block, heading it against Ferran Torres before Sommer collects it.
SAVE! Azpilicueta's cross is blocked by Akanji, but his clearance falls to Pedri on the edge of the box. He threads it through to Koke, who tees up Moreno, but his curling cross is straight into Sommer's gloves.
Seferovic is also being taken off, with Gavranovic on to replace him.
Switzerland are making a double change now and Shaqiri is the first to make way, with Sow on for him.
Koke steps up to take the free-kick that Moreno won on the right and he swings another good cross into the box. He picks out Moreno in the middle, who glances his header on, but it bounces wide of the far post.
SWITZERLAND DOWN TO 10 MEN! Freuler slides in to win the ball back and although he makes contact with it, his feet were high and he caught Moreno with the follow-through. Michael Oliver goes straight to his pocket for the red card and the VAR decision doesn't change anything.
Alba and Olmo are linking up well and the left-back holds up the ball before squaring it into Olmo. He has Widmer tight to him though and can only win a corner from his shot.
Shaqiri is now Switzerland's outright top scorer in European Championship matches with four goals.
Spain look out of ideas at the moment, but when Busquets picks out Moreno, he decides to go it alone. He turns past two Swiss defenders to get into the box but eventually runs into trouble in Zakaria.
Shaqiri looks like he's in again as Sommer goes direct with another long ball over the top. He's chasing it down the left, but Simon rushes out of his box and clears the danger.
Freuler just steps back as Laporte's interception bounces off Pau Torres and into the box before latching onto the ball and laying it off to Shaqiri.
SHAQIRI EQUALISES! It's a horrible mix-up between Laporte and Pau Torres that lets in Freuler and he tees up Shaqiri in the middle of the box. The Spanish defence rush over to him, but he keeps his cool and slots it past Simon and into the bottom corner. 1-1!
Widmer picks up the first booking of the game after he was slightly late and stepped on Busquets.
Still, Spain are trying to pass their way through Switzerland's compact defence and Busquets lifts it over the top to Moreno. There's not much he can do with it apart from pulling it back from the byline and Akanji clears his lines.
GREAT SAVE! Switzerland break quickly on the counter again and Vargas does brilliantly down the left side. He manages to poke it through Azpilicueta's legs to Zuber and he knocks it towards goal, but Simon manages to tip it wide of the near post.
Spain's pressure results in a corner which Koke goes over to take. It's a poor cross into the box from him though and it's cleared at the near post by Akanji.
Spain are keeping possession well again, but they're still struggling to find a way through Switzerland's high press. Olmo drives forward down the left but is eventually nudged off the ball by Widmer.
Koke stands over the free-kick in midfield and he floats it to the near post where Ferran Torres chests it down. He goes for the volley, but Seferovic recovers brilliantly to get back and put it out for a corner.
Switzerland have never won a Euros match when conceding first (D3 L6).
CLOSE! Rodriguez swings a great, deep cross into the far post from the corner and Zakaria rises above Olmo and Ferran Torres to get on the end of it. He heads it back across goal, but it bounces wide of the target.
Second change for Spain now and it's Morata that's making way for Moreno.
Switzerland win a corner and Shaqiri tries to catch the goalkeeper out when he spots him wandering off his line. He whips his cross towards the near post, trying to sneak it in, but sends it into the side netting.
It's a wonderful switch of play from Azpilicueta to pick out Olmo on the left and he skips away from Widmer to swing a good cross into the box. He picks out Koke at the near post, but he sends his header looping high over the bar.
Ferran Torres makes another good run down the right and steps away from Rodriguez to drill a low cross into the box. Morata is waiting in the middle, but it's cut out by Elvedi.
Morata cuts back inside from the right and curls a great cross into the far post for Olmo to run onto. He hits it back across goal first time, but it's held onto by Sommer. It wouldn't have counted anyway though as Morata had been offside.
Switzerland get us back underway for the second half!
There's a change at the break for Spain and it's Olmo that's coming on for Sarabia.
Spain, unsurprisingly, dominated possession, but Switzerland limited them to only a few chances throughout the first half. Luis Enrique will be looking for more of the same from his side after the break though. Switzerland looked dangerous on the counter-attack, without troubling Simon, but they will be encouraging signs for Petkovic.
Zakaria's own goal gives Spain a 1-0 lead over Switzerland at half-time. It was a great start for the Spanish as Alba volleyed Koke's corner back towards goal, but a big deflection off Zakaria wrongfooted Sommer and took it into the back of the net. Azpilicueta also had a header saved by the keeper, while at the other end, Akanji and Widmer both headed wide from corners.
HALF-TIME: SWITZERLAND 0-1 SPAIN.
It's a good spell of possession for Switzerland until a heavy pass from Rodriguez puts Sommer under pressure. The keeper does well to curl his pass around Morata and Elvedi just manages to keep it in on the opposite flank.
Switzerland are still sitting deep and they're making it difficult for Spain to pass their way into the final third still. It's worked out to Ferran Torres on the right again, but he can't find a way past Rodriguez.
Shaqiri lifts the ball over the top to Zuber through the middle and he brings it down well before going into the box. He goes to ground under a challenge from Laporte, but no penalty is given as the offside flag finally goes up against him.
Shaqiri swings another corner into the box and it's over Akanji this time, but Widmer is running onto it at the far post. Pau Torres just does enough to put him off though, and he thumps his header wide.
Widmer has acres of space on the right and he's picked out by Akanji. He plays a one-two with Shaqiri to get into the final third before whipping in a cross, but it's blocked by Alba.
Switzerland's high press is causing Spain a couple of problems, but they manage to switch play out to Pedri on the left. He floats a cross into the box, but it's out of Morata's reach and it bounces harmlessly out for a goal-kick.
The corner is swung into the box for Switzerland and Akanji pulls away from Laporte to get on the end of it. He's on the edge of the six-yard box when he flicks on his header, but sends it high over the bar.
Seferovic plays a one-two with Vargas down the right after being played in by Zakaria and he cuts inside before having a shot. It takes two deflections, off Pau Torres and onto Laporte before going out for a corner.
Akanji intercepts Koke's pass into Ferran Torres and switches play out to Widmer, who is in space on the right. Vargas is making a good run ahead of him, but the throughball is cut out by Alba.
Zakaria's own goal is the tenth we've seen at Euro 2020, which is now one more than were scored at each of the previous 15 editions of the European Championships combined (nine).
Switzerland are still struggling to get possession as Spain continue to knock the ball around comfortably. They work it out to Ferran Torres on the right, but his cross is headed clear by Elvedi ahead of Morata.
SAVE! It's a good corner into the box from Koke this time and he picks out Azpilicueta, who has a free header in the middle of the box after Akanji fell. He flicks his effort on, but it's straight at Sommer, who holds onto it.
Embolo doesn't make it back onto the field and is led straight to the bench by the medical team. Vargas is on in his place.
Switzerland go direct and Rodriguez's long ball is brought down by Shaqiri. He turns before curling a pass through for Seferovic to chase, but it's overhit and Simon collects it as the offside flag goes up.
Embolo has gone down just at the side of the pitch holding his hamstring and it's not looking good for the forward. He's getting treatment now, but it doesn't look like he's going to be able to carry on.
It's a nervy moment at the back for Simon as the ball is knocked back to him and he slices his clearance up under pressure from Embolo. Seferovic brings it down and Switzerland end up winning a corner.
CHANCE! Spain win a free-kick just outside the box and Koke is standing over it. He curls his effort up and over the wall and it is dipping towards the near top corner, but it lands in the roof of the net.
Sarabia whips in a corner this time but it's over the crowd of players in the six-yard box and Laporte can't stretch to bring it down. It falls for Alba again, but he can't find the space for a shot this time.
Pau Torres' pass to Azpilicueta is intercepted by Zuber and he knocks it onto Shaqiri. He does well to hold off Laporte, but he can't get enough on the pass to Seferovic and Spain have it back again.
Switzerland are sitting so deep in their own half but they're making it difficult for Spain to get into the box again. Pedri slides it through for Morata, but he has two defenders with him and he ends up passing it all the way back to Simon.

Pedri and Ferran Torres are linking up well down the right for Spain, but they can't find a way into the box as Switzerland drop deep. They're keeping hold of the ball well but can't do anything with it at the moment.
Shaqiri is quickly in to nick the ball off Busquets and he breaks forward on the counter. He has options ahead of him but chooses to go it alone from the edge of the box, and his effort is blocked by Laporte.
Morata gets the game underway for Spain!

Spain have lost just one of their 22 meetings with Switzerland in all competitions (W16 D5), with that defeat coming in the 2010 World Cup in South Africa.
Luis Enrique makes two changes to his team after their win over Croatia last time out as he brings in Pau Torres and Alba at the back. Garcia and Gaya both drop to the bench.
Vladimir Petkovic makes just one change to the side that started against France, and it's an enforced one. Granit Xhaka is suspended after picking up his second booking of the tournament, so Zakaria comes in for him.

Both sides took part in extraordinary games on Monday to book their place in this round. Spain were taken into extra time by Croatia after their opponents made it 3-3 in stoppage time, but two goals from Alvaro Morata and Mikel Oyarzabal meant it finished 5-3. Meanwhile, Switzerland came from behind to make it 3-3 in the 90th minute against France and took it all the way to penalties, with Yann Sommer saving Kylian Mbappe's spot-kick to send the Swiss into their first Euros quarter-final.
