Commentary

Thanks for joining our commentary this evening. Until next time, goodbye.

Netherlands are next in action against Austria on Thursday in Amsterdam, while Ukraine play North Macedonia in Bucharest on the same day.

Netherlands are off the mark at Euro 2020 with a 3-2 win over Ukraine in an entertaining match in Amsterdam. After a goalless first half, strikes from Georginio Wijnaldum and Wout Weghorst put the Oranje in front and seemingly in command. However, Ukraine launched a comeback through a stunning effort from Andriy Yarmolenko before Roman Yaremchuk equalised with a close-range header. There would be one more twist to the tale as Denzel Dumfries won the game for the hosts, guiding Nathan Ake's cross past Georgi Bushchan.

90'+5'

FULL-TIME: NETHERLANDS 3-2 UKRAINE

90'+4'

Netherlands have learned from their earlier mistakes and are doing a fine job of keeping possession away from Ukraine.

90'+3'

Sydorchuk pulls back Luuk de Jong on a run off the ball and goes into the book.

90'+1'

Malen enters the action to replace Depay in the final third.

90'

In European Championship matches, this is now the most goals scored (five) in a match that was 0-0 at half-time.

90'

There will be five minutes of added time.

89'

Netherlands need to hold their composure at the back now. They've worked their way back in front, but they've already allowed a lead to slip tonight.

88'

Timber is withdrawn for the hosts and is replaced by Veltman at the back.

88'

Luuk de Jong enters the action to replace Weghorst in the final third.

85'

Ake collects on the left flank and lifts a sublime cross into the box for Dumfries to attack and score.

Goal!
85'

GOALLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLL!!!!! DUMFRIES RESTORES NETHERLANDS' LEAD!!!!!!! 3-2!!!!!!! The game takes another incredible turn as Dumfries gets his goal at last this evening. Ukraine fail to clear their lines from a cross into the box and it allows the hosts to recycle possession. Ake sends an inviting delivery in from the left flank towards the back post. Dumfries makes a run and gets ahead of Zinchenko to guide a header towards the bottom-right corner. It evades the dive of Bushchan and into the back of the net.

82'

Netherlands have allowed their lead to slip and now must regain their composure to ensure that they at least take a point from the contest.

80'

After 72 consecutive shots without a goal at the European Championships, Ukraine have just scored with back-to-back attempts, just 246 seconds apart.

79'

Malinovskiy delivers a peach of a cross from the left flank that Yaremchuk connects with and scores.

Goal!
79'

GOALLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLL!!!! YAREMCHUK NODS HOME AN EQUALISER!!!!!!! 2-2!!!! Ukraine turned the game on its head in a matter of minutes. Malinovskiy delivers a perfect ball into the box from a free-kick. Yaremchuk makes a run and beats the attention of Weghorst on the penalty spot. He connects with a powerful header that travels beyond the reach of Stekelenburg into the back of the net. We're heading for a thrilling final 10 minutes.

78'

De Vrij brings down Zinchenko in Netherlands' half, handing Ukraine a free-kick in a dangerous position.

78'

Only his manager - Shevchenko (48) has scored more international goals for Ukraine than Yarmelenko (41).

77'

Ake has to be alert at the back to clear a pass from Shaparenko away from Yaremchuk on the slide.

75'

Yaremchuk sends a return pass back to Yarmolenko on the edge of the box before the winger does the rest with a super effort.

Goal!
75'

WHAT A GOAL!!!! YARMOLENKO GIVES UKRAINE HOPE WITH A STUNNING STRIKE!!! 2-1!!!! The winger comes latches on to an offload from Yaremchuk before curling a super effort beyond the reach of Stekelenburg into the top-left corner. It's an unstoppable strike from 20 yards from the West Ham man, and now Ukraine have something to play for in the final 15 minutes. Game on.

72'

SAVE! Shaparenko feeds Yaremchuk on the edge of the box. The striker turns and fires a powerful strike on his right foot at goal, but Stekelenburg watches it all the way and makes the stop.

70'

Wijnaldum sends Wijndal into space down the left flank and he delivers a dangerous cross. However, Weghorst is just off the pace as he tries to connect at the back post.

68'

No team has lost when two or more goals ahead at the European Championships since Czech Republic lost 2-3 to Turkey at Euro 2008.

66'

The Oranje are in complete control of the game now and can play out the result. It's all about game management now from Netherlands.

64'

Marlos who arrived in the first half to replace Zubkov is in turn withdrawn for Shaparenko. He endured a tough evening.

64'

Van Aanholt is withdrawn by De Boer and is replaced by Wijndal.

64'

Blind makes way at the back for the home side and is replaced by Ake.

62'

Weghorst has scored in back to back games for Netherlands after failing to net in his first five caps.

60'

Ukraine have collapsed at the back and have allowed the home side to take control of the game. Mykolenko has struggled with Dumfries throughout the contest and now has been exposed twice for both goals.

Goal!
58'

GOALLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLL!!!! WEGHORST POUNCES ON THE HALF-VOLLEY!!! 2-0 NETHERLANDS!!!! The striker is on the spot for Netherlands to double their advantage. Dumfries makes another run down the right flank and draws a mistake from Mykolenko. Matvyenko fails to clear the danger at the near post. Weghorst pounces on the loose ball and hammers a right-footed effort on the half-volley past Bushchan. VAR has a check for a foul by Dumfries and offside against the wing-back, but the goal stands.

55'

SAVE! Depay works an offload towards Weghorst on the edge of the box, who turns and fires on his left foot. Sydorchuk gets across to take the pace off the ball and divert it into the hands of Bushchan.

54'

Wijnaldum has scored 15 goals for Netherlands since the end of World Cup 2018, only Memphis Depay (17) has notched more for the Oranje.

Goal!
52'

GOALLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLL!!!! WIJNALDUM FIRES NETHERLANDS AHEAD!!! 1-0!!!! The home side take the lead as Wijnaldum pounces on a mistake and slams a left-footed strike into the top-left corner. Dumfries causes problems with a run down the right flank and he steers a low cross into a dangerous area. Bushchan has to react to push it away from the presence of Depay, but he sends it straight into the path of the Oranje skipper, who converts the opportunity.

50'

De Jong angles a deep cross to the back post for Dumfries to attack. The wing-back nods it down towards Weghorst, but Bushchan reacts to gather ahead of the forward.

47'

Netherlands have lost their last two European Championship matches when level at half-time (1-3 v Russia in 2008 and 1-2 v Portugal in 2012).

46'

We're back under way in Amsterdam.

Half

Ukraine have had a couple of moments, but Netherlands have been the more dangerous side. Frank de Boer will be pleased with his side's performance, but will be crying out for a clinical edge in the second half to break the deadlock.

Half

It's goalless at the break between Netherlands and Ukraine in this Euro 2020 Group C clash. The Oranje have had the better of the opportunities as Denzel Dumfries was denied by Georgi Bushchan and sent a free header wide. Georginio Wijnaldum also saw an effort brilliantly stopped by the Ukraine keeper to keep the scores level.

45'+1'

HALF-TIME: NETHERLANDS 0-0 UKRAINE

45'

There will be one minute of added time.

45'

Yaremchuk and Yarmolenko combine in the right-inside channel, but the West Ham man cannot get the ball out of his feet before Stekelenburg forces the mistake and the winger bundles the ball behind for a goal-kick.

44'

Depay almost latches on to De Jong's throughball, but he loses control before he can turn and shoot. Zabarnyi is on hand for Ukraine to clear behind.

42'

Netherlands have seized the initiative and are putting Ukraine under serious pressure at the back as we approach the interval.

40'

MISS! Dumfries spurns a glorious chance at the back post. Depay lifts a sublime cross to the back post for the wing-back, who is unmarked. However, Dumfries can only plant his free header wide of the right post.

39'

BUSHCHAN DENIES WIJNALDUM!!! The Ukraine keeper makes a great one-handed stop to palm Wijnaldum's effort on the half-volley away from goal. The Netherlands skipper connects well with his strike that takes a deflection. It wrong-foots Bushchan, but he recovers to produce a tremendous save.

37'

OVER! Van Aanholt lines up a blast from distance after latching on to a loose ball. However, the wing-back drills his effort comfortably over the bar.

36'

Weghorst breaks behind Zabarnyi in the left-inside channel. He turns to try to force a low ball across the face of goal, but the defender recovers to deflect it behind.

33'

Depay drops his shoulder on the left flank and floats a cross-field ball across to the back post, but it sails away from Dumfries and out for a goal-kick.

32'

The last time Netherlands played a European Championship game at the Johan Cruijff Arena (Netherlands - Italy in 2000), the Dutch had Frank Rijkaard as their manager, who was younger than Stekelenburg is today.

30'

SAVE! Malinovskiy offloads towards Yarmolenko and he takes a touch on to his left foot. The Oranje close and force him back on to his weaker right foot. Yarmolenko opts for the strike, but he sends his effort straight at Stekelenburg.

28'

Van Aanholt makes an important intervention at the back for the hosts. He sticks out a leg to poke the ball away from Yarmolenko on the charge just when the winger was about to pull the trigger. He had to get that challenge right.

27'

SAVE! Bushchan to the rescue for Ukraine. The keeper has to time his challenge to perfection to rob Weghorst of possession in the box after Depay's flick releases the forward in the box. Bushchan sticks out a hand and grabs the ball before the forward can round him.

26'

Dumfries shifts the ball out of his feet before delivering a sublime low cross into the six-yard box. However, Weghorst and Depay are both on their heels in the penalty area and fails to attack the delivery.

25'

Netherlands are in need of a period of possesssion to find their attacking rhythm. Ukraine are playing the better football at the moment.

23'

CLOSE! Depay pokes a low ball through the Ukraine defence that travels towards an unmarked Van Aanholt. The wing-back just cannot make contact in front of goal as Bushchan clears the danger. There could have been an element of offside there, but it was a close one.

22'

Yarmolenko is played into space by Yaremchuk, but after running down the right flank he gets isolated and misses good crossing opportunity.

21'

After a frenetic opening 10 minutes the game has settled. It may suit Ukraine more than the hosts, who appeared to be enjoying the brisk tempo.

20'

Malinovskiy tries to surge through Netherlands' defence and goes down under pressure from De Roon, but the referee tells the Ukraine man to get to his feet.

17'

Mykolenko has a run at Dumfries down the left flank, but he gets too much power on his cross and Yaremchuck cannot connect with a header in the middle.

15'

Karavaev works the ball towards Yaremchuk in the final third. The striker takes aim at goal, but he can only scuff his effort at Stekelenburg.

13'

Zubkov is unable to continue after picking up a foot injury, and makes way for Marlos.

12'

Netherlands are the first team to have as many as seven shots in the opening 10 minutes of a EUROs game since 1980 (previous most was five).

10'

Zubkov is struggling for Ukraine and has to undergo treatment on the sideline. It would be a blow for Shevchenko's men to lose him in the early stages of the game.

8'

De Roon wins the ball back for Netherlands high up the field before feeding Wijnaldum. The skipper lines up a drive that is well blocked by Matvyenko.

7'

OVER! Netherlands continue to thrive in the final third. Dumfries surges down the right flank and sends a cutback towards Wijnaldum. The Oranje skipper pulls the trigger on a first-time strike, only to lift his attempt over the bar.

5'

SAVE! Bushchan produces a vital save for Ukraine, blocking Dumfries' close-range effort with his legs. Wijnaldum releases the wing-back into space in the right-inside channel, where Dumfries shoots first time. However, the keeper comes up with the stop.

4'

Malinovskiy loops the corner into the box, but Yarmolenko climbing at the back post can only head wide of the left post.

4'

Yarmolenko twists and turns down the right flank before delivering a dangerous low cross towards the near post. De Vrij has to be alert to steer it behind for a corner.

2'

SAVE! Depay leads a brilliant surge through the Ukraine defence before striking from just inside the box on his left foot. However, his low effort is tame and straight at Bushchan.

2'

Ukraine press down the right flank through Yarmolenko. Karavaev is denied by Blind before Yaremchuk sees his strike blocked. Zubkov tries to turn, but he get crowded out before he can threaten.

1'

We're under way in Amsterdam.

This is the first meeting between the Netherlands and Ukraine at a major tournament (World Cup or European Championship). The Dutch are unbeaten in their two previous encounters – both friendlies, winning 3-0 in Rotterdam in May 2008 and drawing 1-1 in Donetsk in August 2010.

Ukraine have made four changes to their side from their win over Cyprus last time out. Bushchan returns between the posts to replace Pyatov, who drops to the bench. Karavaev and Mykolenko start in the full-back positions, while Sydorchuk slots into the middle of the park.

De Boer has made one change to his side from their victory over Georgia in their final warm-up match. Van Aanholt comes into the side at left wing-back in place of Wijndal, who drops to the bench. The Oranje are still without Matthijs de Ligt due to a groin injury, which sees Timber start alongside Blind and De Vrij in the backline. Depay and Weghorst lead the line for Netherlands.

UKRAINE SUBS: Eduard Sobol, Sergey Krivtsov, Taras Stepanenko, Mykola Shaparenko, Marlos Bonfim, Andriy Pyatov, Evgeniy Makarenko, Artem Besedin, Anatolii Trubin, Oleksandr Tymchyk, Denys Popov, Artem Dovbyk.

NETHERLANDS SUBS: Joel Veltman, Nathan Ake, Owen Wijndal, Steven Berghuis, Luuk de Jong, Tim Krul, Davy Klaassen, Ryan Gravenberch, Donyell Malen, Marco Bizot, Teun Koopmeiners, Cody Gakpo.

NETHERLANDS (3-5-2): Maarten Stekelenburg; Jurrien Timber, Stefan de Vrij, Daley Blind; Denzel Dumfries, Maarten de Roon, Georginio Wijnaldum, Frenkie de Jong, Patrick van Aanholt; Wout Weghorst, Memphis Depay.

Ukraine endured a disappointing campaign in Euro 2016, losing all three of their group stage matches. Andriy Shevchenko has a good opportunity to improve on their last outing in an attempt to reach the knockout phase for the first time as an independent nation. Ukraine were excellent in qualifying, topping their group ahead of Portugal, notching a 2-1 win over the Selecao in the process. They will need that reach that standard and a lot more to break out of the group stage.

Netherlands embark on their first European Championship campaign in nine years after failing to qualify for Euro 2016. The Oranje have rebuilt their side after failing to reach the last two major competitions, and now have a exciting core of players that could challenge for honours for years to come. All eyes will be on Frank de Boer to conjure performances out of a talented team that could make a deep surge in this tournament.

Good evening and welcome to the live commentary of the Euro 2020 Group C clash between Netherlands and Ukraine at the Johan Cruijff Arena.
